mervynblack. biography

I have been an architect for over 30 years, having been a founding partner within a successful Belfast architectural practice Hall Black Douglas. I am a member of the Royal Society of Ulster Architects (RSUA) and  the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA), and was President of the RSUA from 2004 to 2006 and a member of Council of the RIBA for two years . I am also registered as an Architect on the role of the Architects Registration Board (ARB). Whilst retired now, I continue to lecture part-time within the Architecture school at Queen's University Belfast, and retain my love of design and urban form.

On a personal note, I am married to Lily, have 3 married children and 6 grandchildren, all of whom become targets for my photography! My passion for architecture was passed on to my two sons David and Philip, both of whom share my interest and have followed my career path into design related fields. Check out Hall Black Douglas Ltd. for some of mine and also David's work; and call into Philip Black Research to view some of the core academic issues current in design today.

My love for photography has grown over the years, allied to a love of not just architecture, but also travel. Hopefully you will enjoy some of my images from around the world. However my own Island of Ireland remains the ultimate treasure for those wielding a camera and lens! I would recommend for those who have not visited to do so and remember your spare battery (you will need it!)

I love to hear feedback of my shots, and others advice and experiences so feel free to contact me.
